Obituary for Barber R. Lawson

Barber Rice Lawson, son of the late Fielding Armstead Lawson, Sr. and Julia Leonia Davis Lawson, departed this life on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at Culpeper Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center.

Barber was born June 24, 1938 in Culpeper County. He accepted Christ at an early age, and was baptized at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Lignum, VA where he remained a member until his passing. In his early years, he attended church regularly and was active in many of the church’s organizations. In his later years he held the position of church treasurer. Barber was educated in the Culpeper County School system and served as a school bus driver, while attending there. He had a successful career at the Culpeper Concrete Company initially as a driver and advanced to the position of Plant Manager. After retirement from the concrete company, he drove for Quarles Oil Company and finally worked part-time at Yowell Hardware in Culpeper, VA. Barber enjoyed working with his hands and after the hardware store closed, he restored antique lamps at his home garage/shop. He spent most of his days in his garage/shop, where many would seek him out for repairs of various items or ask his advice on “how to” repair items.

Barber was a 32nd Degree Mason. Prior to his hospitalization, he was the Senior Warden of Piedmont Masonic Lodge #75 and previously held the position of Master. He also was a member of the Warrenton Consistory #315.

In addition to his parents, Barber was preceded in death by his loving wife, Fannie; his son; his sister, Shirley Garnett and his brother, Fielding (Fennybug) Lawson, Jr.

He will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Carolyn (Lynda) Lightfoot of Lignum, VA; in-laws, Thomas Garnett of Summerduck, VA, Sue Wormley of Culpeper, VA, Rosie and Wesley Spillman of Culpeper, VA, Carolyn Wormley of Mitchell, VA, and James Thompson of Culpeper, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members and friends.
