Obituary for Russell Franklin Ferris

Russell Franklin Ferris, 92, of Culpeper County entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the James River Convalescent & Rehabilitation Center in Newport News, Virginia.

Born on November 17, 1925, he was the eldest son of the late Jesse Ferris and Viola Booten Ferris. In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his son Kevin Russell Ferris; brothers, James, Jesse, Frank and Hugh; and sister, Frances Rutherford.

Russell grew up on a 200 acre farm and learned to love farming and gardening. During his adult life he not only helped his mother on her farm but also enjoyed “mini” farming on his own 11 acres. He was often seen on his tractor with his bush hog on 522 heading to assist friends, neighbors and his church.

Russell served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded medals for service in the Asiatic-Pacific; American area. He was an active member of Good Hope Baptist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Trustee Board, member of Bible Class, Men’s Club, Cemetery Committee and Sunday School. He was a faithful member of the Salem Ruritan Club and the Culpeper VFW. He was also a longtime member of the Culpeper Branch of the NAACP and was recognized for his faithful service in 2011. He was an active member of the Sunny Fountain Lodge #1897 and District Grand Lodge #15 honored him with an Honorary District Grand Master collar.

Russell spent more than 35 years as an employee of the Culpeper Farmer’s CO-OP. Russell was well known by all of the local farmers. Russell also worked in the Tidewater area and Maryland doing road construction in the late 1950’s and little did he know he would spend his final days there as well.

Russell is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years Marie Jackson Ferris, daughter Tricia Wilson and husband Jacob M. Wilson, III, two grandchildren Alexandra Wilson and McKinley Wilson, two sisters Lucille Keys (Washington, DC) and Sally Slaughter (Boston, VA); two aunts Laura Hoffman (Reva, VA) and Dolly Berry (New York); and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
