Obituary for James Lewis, Jr . "Biggie"

James “Biggie” Lewis Jr. (93), was peacefully called to his eternal rest on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Biggie, as he was fondly known, a twin son that was born to the late James Lewis, Sr. and Ella Green Lewis of Culpeper, Virginia on September 23, 1924.

He was educated in the Culpeper School System. Biggie was a strong and loving family man. He was blessed with three children from his first marriage, one daughter and two sons; Barbara, Gregory and Dennis Lewis. In 1971, he married Minnie Jasper and was blessed with one son; James Kevin Lewis.
In the early 1960s, he started his own construction business as a General Contractor. Throughout many years of his construction work, he employed many of his family and friends.
He was responsible for building and remodeling houses and churches in the surrounding county. He also completed the brick work of the Mount Olive Baptist Church and the masonry work on the Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Center.
He built the addition of Mount Olive Baptist Church multi-purpose room along with his son and other employees, which was dedicated to him in 2015. He was also honored with a Living Legend Award for years of dedicated service and leadership, retiring at the young age of 84.
Biggie was a life-long dedicated member of Mount Olive Baptist Church where he served for many years as an Usher, Trustee and Treasurer. While an active member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Biggie also attended Mount Zion Baptist Church, Criglersville, VA with his wife Minnie. He served as a driver for some of the members of a fifty-two voice community choir, under the leadership of the late Rev. John A. Holmes, Sr. He was a member of “The Bionics” a club of community church members dedicated to helping families in need.
Biggie enjoyed bowling, gardening, cooking on the grill and church activities. He also thoroughly enjoyed the vegetables Minnie canned and froze for his enjoyment. He will be remembered as a quiet, devoted family man who served his family, church and the community well.
In addition to his parents, Biggie was preceded in death by his two brothers; William and Biggie’s twin brother Jack Lewis; four sisters, Novella Hill, Ruth Lewis, Marjorie Andrews, and Louise Tutt (who was the twin to William); and son-in-law, Michael Crews.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Minnie Lewis; one sister; Elnora Findlater; one brother, Stanley Lewis; his children, Barbara Crews of Chesterfield, VA, Otis Gregory Lewis (Monedia) of Culpeper, VA, Dennis Kyle Lewis, Sr. (Debbie) of Chesterfield, VA and James Kevin Lewis (Maggie) of Frederick, MD; three grandchildren, Cisco Crews (Sheleta), Octavia “Missy” Yates (Gerald), and Dennis K. Lewis, Jr.; three great grandchildren; Jordan Crews, Zoren Yates and Yasnomila Dennis Milusheva; one step granddaughter, Lindsey Custer; one brother-in-law, SGM, Ret. Norman William Jasper (Vanessa); and a host of loving and devoted nieces, nephews, family and friends.
